The IHMC CmapLite program is a version of CmapTools that has been reduced in functionality to allow it to run on smaller machines with
a reduced memory size, in particular the Intel Classmate and the OLPC XO running Windows XP. IHMC CmapLite is also appropriate for
older machines with small main memory. As is CmapTools, CmapLite is available in Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and Solaris versions
The IHMC CmapLite program empowers users to construct, navigate, share and criticize knowledge models represented as concept maps.
It allows users to, among many other features, construct their Cmaps in their personal computer, share them on servers (CmapServers) anywhere on the
Internet, link their Cmaps to other Cmaps on servers, automatically create web pages of their concept maps on servers, and edit their maps synchronously
(at the same time) with other users on the Internet.
The IHMC CmapLite client is FREE for use by anybody, whether its use is commercial or non-commercial. In particular,
schools and universities are encouraged to download it and install it in as many computers as desired, and students and teachers may make copies
of it and install it at home.
IHMC CmapLite has been tested on machines with a small memory size, but since CmapLite is written in Java, running it on machines
with 256MB of main memory and no virtual memory can be a problem, particularly when running other applications at the same time. If used on machine
with 256MB of real memory with no virtual memory it is recommended that no other applications are run at the same time. With 200MB or more of virtual
memory, or with 384MB or more of main memory CmapLite should run fine.
IHMC CmapLite has been translated into nineteen (19) different languages. It runs in
Catalan, Chinese, Czech, Dutch, English, Basque, Finnish, French, Galician, German, Italian, Japanese, Kuna, Portuguese,
Spanish, Swedish, Greek, Turkish and Estonian. CmapLite defaults to the language of the operating system, but can be changed in the Preferences
menu item. For detailed instructions please refer to the Help
and read the entry titled "How to Change the Language".
Please notice the list of modules
(functions) of CmapTools that have been removed and are not available in IHMC CmapLite described below. We welcome feedback on additions/deletions from this list. We have not yet resized dialogue boxes to fit in the smaller screens on some of these machines. This version of CmapLite is not
ready to be run on OLPC computers running Linux and Sugar; it will run on OLPC computers running Windows XP, on Classmate PC computers running Windows XP or Linux, and other similar small computers.
Please provide us with feedback regarding any problems you run into or suggestions regarding IHMC CmapLite.
